How fast you pull data in — streaming, loading, downloads.

  1. Pause the big data users first: stop 4K streams, console/game updates and cloud photo backups, then re-test.Free · try firstOne line is shared, so a single 4K stream or update download can eat most of your speed.
  2. Switch off any VPN or proxy on this device, then run the test again.Free · try firstA VPN routes all traffic through a distant server and can easily halve your download speed.
  3. Power-cycle the router: unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in, wait for a solid connection light.Free · try firstRouters accumulate faults over weeks of uptime — a clean restart clears them.
  4. Stand within sight of the router and join its 5 GHz network (often named '-5G' or '-5GHz').A setting to change5 GHz is far faster than 2.4 GHz up close and less crowded by neighbors’ Wi-Fi.

Upload

How fast you send data out — calls, posting, backups.

  1. Pause cloud backups and photo sync (OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud Photos, Dropbox) on all devices, then re-test.Free · try firstUpload is a narrow shared lane, and one background photo or video backup can fill it entirely.
  2. Disconnect any VPN and run the test again.Free · try firstUpload usually takes the biggest hit from a VPN's detour.
  3. Get within sight of the router and join its 5 GHz network (SSID often ends in '5G').Free · try firstYour device transmits at far lower power than the router, so weak Wi-Fi hurts upload first.
  4. In Zoom/Teams/Meet video settings, turn off 'send HD video' (or 'HD').A setting to changeOutgoing HD video is most people's single heaviest upload, and standard quality needs a fraction of it.
  5. Connect the device to the router with a Cat5e or better ethernet cable for big uploads.HardwareWired delivers whatever upload your plan actually has.

Latency

The round-trip delay (ping) — what makes things feel instant.

  2. If you're connected to a VPN, disconnect it and retest.Free · try firstEvery packet takes the long way round while a VPN is on.

Jitter

How much the delay wobbles — the cause of choppy calls.

  1. Pause background uploads and downloads: cloud sync, backups, OS updates, plus other devices streaming or gaming.Free · try firstBursts of traffic make each packet wait a different amount. That variation is jitter.
  2. Move closer to the router or clear walls and obstacles until your signal is near full.Free · try firstWeak signal makes Wi-Fi retransmit dropped packets, and each retry adds unpredictable delay.

Packet loss

The share of packets that never arrive — glitches and drops.

  1. Re-run the test with your device plugged straight into the router by ethernet cable.Free · try firstIf the loss disappears on a cable, the fault was your Wi-Fi. That one result settles where to look.
  2. Power-cycle the router: unplug 30 seconds, then reseat the power, ethernet, and wall coax/phone cables.Free · try firstA restart clears stale router state, and a loose or corroded connector silently drops packets.
  3. On Wi-Fi, move within sight of the router, away from microwaves, cordless phones, and thick walls.Free · try firstDistance, walls, and interference corrupt packets in flight, and damaged packets get thrown away.

Steadiness

Whether your speed holds, or surges and collapses — long downloads, streams, and backups feel the swings.

  1. Pause everything else on the connection — 4K streams, game and OS updates, cloud sync on every device — then re-test.Free · try firstCompeting traffic arrives in bursts, and every burst carves a notch out of your rate. A line that steadies with nothing else running points at your own household, not the ISP.
  2. Re-run the test plugged into the router by ethernet cable.Free · try firstWi-Fi rates lurch with interference and signal strength — if the swings vanish on a cable, they were the airwaves, not the line.

Bufferbloat

Latency that spikes when the link is busy — lag during downloads and uploads.

  1. Pause big background transfers — Windows updates, Steam/console downloads, cloud photo and file sync — during calls and games.Free · try firstBufferbloat only appears when the link is maxed out — freeing bandwidth clears the spike instantly.
  2. Re-test wired via an Ethernet cable to the router to check if the spikes remain.Free · try firstIf it's still bad while wired, the buffer is in the router or ISP line, not Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn on your router's queue management: SQM, Adaptive QoS (Asus), or Dynamic QoS (Netgear).A setting to changeThese keep the queue short, so your ping barely rises even at full speed.
  4. If there’s no auto option, enable QoS and cap both download and upload to ~85–90% of measured speed.A setting to changeThe cap moves the queue into your router, where it's managed. The upload cap matters most.
